What's included

Why drivers pick Smog Mart for their smog

We’ve been smogging Sacramento since 1995. The station is STAR certified by the Bureau of Automotive Repair, which means the DMV can send you here for any test type — including the STAR and gross-polluter tests that regular stations can’t perform. You never have to figure out which kind of station you need.

Every test is run by a licensed inspector on a state-monitored analyzer. When you pass, the certificate goes to the DMV electronically while you’re still in the lobby, so you can renew online the same day.

What to expect

Pull in, hand us the keys, and we’ll call you when it’s done. Typical time is 30–45 minutes; if there’s a line, Joe at the desk will give you a straight estimate. You’ll get the printed certificate and a copy of the inspection report.

If the car doesn’t pass, we’ll show you exactly what tripped it. Our ASE-certified technicians can diagnose and repair emissions problems here — check-engine codes, catalytic converters, EVAP leaks, O2 sensors — and re-test for free once the repair is done. No second trip across town to a different shop.

Before you come in

  • Check engine light must be off. If it’s on, the car fails automatically under state law and you’ll still be charged for the test. Get it diagnosed first (we can do that in the same visit).
  • Drive the car 15–20 minutes beforehand so it’s fully warmed up.
  • Aftermarket exhaust or intake parts must have a CARB EO sticker.
  • Make sure the gas cap seals.

Smog check for title transfers and out-of-state cars

Selling a car in California requires a smog within 90 days of the sale. Bringing a car in from another state requires one before the DMV will register it. Both are the standard $58 test here — no special appointment needed.

Smog check questions

Do I need an appointment for a smog check?

No. Walk in any time we're open. Most smogs take 30–45 minutes including the wait; appointments cut the wait down.

Is $58 the whole price?

Yes — $58 includes the state certificate. STAR and test-only smogs are the same $58. Gross polluter and some diesels may differ; call for a quote.

What if my check engine light is on?

It will fail — that's California law, no exceptions, and the test fee still applies. Tell us before we test and we'll pair the smog with a $175 diagnostic (credited toward the repair) so you get the full picture in one visit.

What happens if my car fails?

You pay $49.75 for the failed test. If we do the repairs, your re-test within 30 days is free.

Do I need to bring anything?

Nothing for a standard smog — we look the vehicle up. If the DMV sent a STAR notice, bring it so we run the right test type.

How often do I need a smog?

Every two years for most vehicles over 8 years old, at change of ownership, and when registering an out-of-state car in California.
