What's included

Who needs a VSSI

  • Anyone registering a salvage or rebuilt-title vehicle in California
  • DMV or CHP referrals after a total loss or theft recovery
  • Vehicles whose DMV letter asks for a “brake and lamp” or “VSSI” certificate
  • Out-of-state salvage vehicles coming into California

Not sure which certificate your letter is asking for? Text a photo of it to (916) 427-7664 and we’ll tell you before you drive over.

What the inspection covers

The VSSI is a full safety-systems inspection, not just brakes and lights. A licensed inspector works through the state checklist: brake system and hydraulics, every exterior lamp and headlamp aim, steering and suspension, tires, seat belts, airbag and ABS warning-lamp status, frame condition and alignment. It takes real time — plan on 2–4 hours.

How it goes

  1. Book or drop off. Bring the DMV paperwork and title. Morning drop-offs usually go home the same day.
  2. We inspect. A licensed VSSI inspector runs the complete checklist.
  3. You approve any fixes. If something won’t pass, you get photos and a written quote. Nothing gets done without a yes.
  4. Certificate issued. We file it electronically and hand you the certificate the DMV needs.

Trucks, vans, motorcycles and lowered cars

Pricing for anything heavier than a car depends on gross vehicle weight: most pickups and SUVs are $395; duallies and heavy vans run up to $795. We do VSSI on motorcycles — call for a quote. Lowered vehicles are fine on our lift; if it’s under 3 inches of clearance, call ahead so we can plan the rack.

VSSI inspection questions

Is the VSSI the same as a brake and lamp inspection?

It replaced it. If your DMV letter still says "brake and lamp inspection required," the VSSI is the test you actually need — the DMV paperwork hasn't caught up everywhere.

How much does a VSSI cost?

$295 for cars and sedans. Trucks, vans and SUVs are $395 (under 10,000 lb GVWR) up to $795 for the heaviest duallies. Motorcycles: call for a quote.

How long does it take?

2–4 hours. Drop it off in the morning and it's usually ready the same afternoon.

Do many vehicles fail the first time?

Yes — the VSSI is far more thorough than the old brake and lamp test, so a lot of revived vehicles need something. We don't leave you in the dust: you get a written list, photos, and a quote, and nothing is repaired without your OK.

Can I get the smog done in the same visit?

Yes. Most salvage registrations need both, and we're a STAR smog station too, so it's one drop-off.

What should I bring?

The DMV letter or referral, your ID, and the title or salvage certificate.
